In the North Atlantic, the ‘Terra Nova' lugger is having a bad fishing season. Cod is scarce and the captain decides to sail to Greenland – a dangerous crossing for a sailing vessel with no engine. As the crew struggles with the storms and icy waters of the Atlantic, families left behind struggle to survive the adversities of Portugal's social and political life in the late 1930s.
